How to obtain Health Insurance

There are two ways to obtain health insurance. One way is to get a subsidy from the Healthcare Marketplace. The other is from private health plans, without a subsidy from the government.

There are specific enrollment timelines that must be adhered to when purchasing your health insurance.

They are:

Hands Document and a Pen

Annual Election Period (AEP):

November 1st to January 15th. During this enrollment period a person can make changes to their health plan for the next plan year. At this time of the year you are allowed to consider/research other options to your existing health insurance.

Special Election Period (SEP):

January 16th to November 1st. During this election period a person can only make changes to their existing health plan due to specific reasons. These reasons include but are not limited to:
  • Involuntary loss of existing coverage
  • Birth/Adoption of a child
  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Change in residency
  • Prior to electing COBRA coverage. (If COBRA has been elected you will be unable to cancel the policy unless it is during the annual election period.)
